FVA Jerusalem Res. 3-3 AFC West End
Jerusalem Divided
The Beers had reason to celebrate at last having notched their first league point in five games with a keenly contested draw at FVA Jerusalem Res. Despite taking just a bare eleven across Lincoln for the game West End acquitted themselves well on a bobbly pitch and took the lead after quarter of an hour as James Dewhurst managed to break into the box and though his first effort was saved he turned it in at the second attempt for a 1-0 lead. AFC West End 1-2 Potterhanworth
Poor Start Continues with Potters Defeat
AFC West End’s poor start to the season continued with a first ever defeat to Potterhanworth in the twilight. The Potters struck a late and controversial winner in the near darkness four minutes from time to sink ‘the beers’ to their second successive defeat and their worst ever start to a season. Things had begun well for West End who had already come close on a couple of ocassions before Jamie Lawrence broke down the left and finished from a tight angle to give West End the lead. At the other end stand-in keeper Glen Wilson was tested just twice, holding a low shot and turning a free-kick away. Unfortunately moments from the break Potterhanworth equalised as they broke onto a long ball over the top, Adie Gray got back to make a great tackle on the Potters forward but he righted himself and put the ball between Wilson’s legs to make it 1-1 at the break. Tavern FC 7-3 AFC West End
Opening Day Despair at Tavern
A disappointing afternoon at Bishop Grosseteste College ended with AFC West End suffering their first ever opening day defeat at the hands of Tavern FC. Most frustrating for West End was that they had started the much better side, coming close to an opening goal just minutes into the game as Joe Harper hit the post with a header. Jamie Lawrence also came close when put through on goal, but it was the hosts who struck against the run of play, their forward cutting in from the right before scoring with a low finish. AFC West End 1-2 Tower Athletic
Tower Almost Toppled
Up against Premier Division opposition West End were chasing their most significant giant-killing feat today as they hosted Tower Athletic in the Ron Eaglen Challenge Cup. Things didn’t start too well for West End as their hosts took control early on and took the lead fifteen minutes in. However, the home side slowly began to assert themselves on the game and grabbed a deserved equaliser ten minutes from the break as Gav Sumner got in behind the Tower back line. Sadly though West End couldn’t hold on ‘til the break as Tower levelled from a set-piece; their forward rising highest in a melee at the far post that left Gav Sumner with concussion. Waddington United Res. 2-2 AFC West End
Waddo Way to Draw
A patched up AFC West End managed to secure an unlikely draw at Waddington United Reserves. Shaun Hepple returned to the side, but clearly still injured his sole contribution was a booking before being taken off at half-time. The home side managed to take the initiative and aided by the presence of their own Jan Koller up front led the match 2-1. West End suffered further trouble when John Moore “heard three noises” as he went down injured and was carried off the field leaving just ten men to form a fight-back. However they did just that as Sam McDonnell grabbed his second goal of the game to level the scores, and it could have been even better as Andy Kirk struck the post from distance.
Starting Line-up (4-4-2): Andy Taylor; Jez Ashberry, Shaun Hepple, Jonny Dyas, Stephen Pearce; John Moore, Andy Kirk, Glen Wilson, Phil Lodge; Sam McDonnell, Rich Dungworth
Substitute: Joe Harper
Travellers Rest Res. 1-12 AFC West End
West End Hit a Dozen Against Sorry Travellers
In horrible conditions on the Cowpaddle West End faced Travellers Rest second string and never looked like losing from the opening moments of the match. Rich Dungworth was first to get on the score sheet with Sam McDonnell adding a second soon after, testing the keeper with knee-high backpass that he made a mess of. More first half goals followed from Marcus Tester and Matty Evans who fired in his his first goal of the season and celebrated in suitable fashion. Sam McDonnell added a further two to complete a first half hat-trick making the half-time score an emphatic 6-0 to the visitors. Read the rest of this entry
