AFC West End Reinstated Into Fred Quibell Junior Cup

Following the monthly league AGM on Monday, AFC West End have been informed by league secretary John Wilson that they have been reinstated into the Fred Quibell Junior Cup. This comes after the disqualification of AFC’s previous opponents Welton S&SC Reserves.

West End will now travel to Horncastle on Sunday 20th February to take on Division Six leaders AFC Harpars in the second round of the cup. The fixtures on this website have been updated accordingly.

AFC West End were dumped out of the Fred Quibell Junior Cup by an impressive Welton side who were better than AFC from start to finish. West End’s late season promotion push suffered a set-back on the road with a 2-1 defeat at picturesque Welton, leading some to suggest that fishing balls from a stream with a corner flag is not ideal match preparation. On a small hard pitch the Beers struggled to impose themselves in the early stages with the ball rarely on the floor long enough to string any sort of passes together. Welton dealt with the conditions better and took a twentieth minute lead in bizarre circumstances; a high lifted cross from the left evaded those in the box but took a high enough bounce to balloon over Christian Sales and drop under the cross-bar.

Sublime Nine as West End Get Off the Mark

AFC West End finally got off the mark five games into the season and they did so in spectacular fashion; routing previously second place Welton S&SC Reserves 9-3 thanks to a devastating first half display that saw them go in for half-time 7-1 in front. Incredibly given the scoreline it was actually the visitors to showed the early initiative as they got men forward to put West End on the back foot. And when they took the lead quarter of an hour in, capitalising as West End failed to clear a set-piece, it was no more than they had deserved. However, their strength in numbers going forward was to prove their downfall at the back as Welton fell foul of the First Law of Sunday Football; thall shall not use wingbacks, and were subsequently picked apart.
