New Look West End Grind Out Deserved Opening Day Win

AFC West End begun their seventh competitive season following an extensive pre-season and the assembly of their largest squad to start a season. Despite this the Beers were left with a selection headache before the game with Joe Harper, James Dewhurst, Pally Dhindsa, Rob Davies and Harry Rickels all unavailable. Rich Dungworth attempted to start the game but succumbed to a calf injury sustained in training, adding his name to list of absentees. 

Pre-Season Roundup

AFC’s pre-season campaign came to a close today with a respectable 1-1 draw with De Wint. Details are below of the last five of West End’s six pre-season matches.

AFC West End 3-3 Metheringham
AFC battled to a draw with Metheringham with Paul Crampton star of the show netting a hat-trick.

Hykeham Tigers 4-0 AFC West End
Despite a decent start West End failed to get to grips with Hykeham Tigers and were beaten 4-0.

Newtoft Terriers 0-3 AFC West End
The only victory in pre-season was a good omen for West End as it came against their opponents for the opening day of the league season. Goals came in the first half Rich Dungworth with the first followed by a double from Sam McDonnell.

Millers Arms 11-0 AFC West End
Millers Arms continued their impressive pre-season battering AFC 11-0. The Division Six side looked capable of playing at a far higher level and will be favorites for promotion.

AFC West End 1-1 De Wint
Following the heavy defeat to Millers Arms, AFC bounced back in style against De Wint. They took the lead when Ady Gray stabbed home a corner, and were only pegged back late on following a mistake.

New Start at Newtoft

AFC West End took to the field in sweltering conditions today asthey opened their pre-season campaign with a respectable 3-2 victory over Division Six champions Newtoft Terriers. As is synonymous with pre-season campaigns, West End’s line-up was a mystery even to the manager and players until shortly before kick off. The biggest surprise was the return of Adam Bierton in goal, making his first appearance for the club in over three years. Joe Harper slotted into defence alongside Rich Brown, with James Dewhurst and Martin Robinson as full-backs. The midfield saw a short and tall combination of Dan Hill and David Capps in the middle with Jack McDonnell and Rob Davies on the wings. Partnering Sam McDonnell in attack was Dan Vines, who manager Stephen Pearce openly admitted was a transfer target ahead of the new season.

No Terror from the Terriers

West End continued to revive their end of season with a second win. Having enjoyed a rare four day break in a hectic six games in two weeks schedule West End were refreshed enough to overcome Newtoft Terriers thanks to two Sam McDonnell goals.

West End Undone by Terriers

A scrappy game played for a long time in horrible conditions ended with Newtoft Terriers taking all three points. West End had gone in front in the first half thanks to Mike Northern’s far post finish but they failed to add more goals to their tally. Newtoft levelled from the penalty spot after a defensive mix up left Matty Evans with no option but to take down the Terriers’ attacker.
