AFC West End 4-3 The George Market Rasen

West End Break Home Hoodoo With Victory Over Market Rasen

After defeating bottom club George & Dragon in convincing style, AFC faced an altogether more different challenge against an impressive Market Rasen side. With their momentum building West End were aiming to stretch their unbeaten run to four games by recording their first back to back wins, to do this though they would need to do something they had yet to do so far this season, win on their new West Common pitch.

George & Dragon 0-5 AFC West End

Vickers Hat-Trick Helps AFC Slay Dragon

AFC West End made it three games unbeaten with a dominant victory over a poor George & Dragon. There was a worry before kick off as the Sobraon pitch was shrouded in fog which only cleared towards the end of the final warm up. West End were without Mike O’Keeffe so Dave Capps started on the wing in front of James Dewhurst at left back.

AFC had the best of the early play, Sam McDonnell missed with an instinctive effort from close range whilst Rich Dungworth also came close with a chipped effort over the onrushing keeper. George and Dragon were struggling to get a handle on the game and appeared poorly organised from front to back.

West End were keen to take advantage of their dominance but waited a long time before they opened the scoring. One of many cynical fouls from the George & Dragon was punished with a free kick, Dane Vincent delivered it into the box and Rich Dungworth met it first time to give AFC a deserved lead. The goal settled West End whilst George & Dragon turned on themselves and the referee. Half time came with AFC rightfully in front, and rarely troubled at the back.

Red Lion Dunston 3-7 AFC West End

Dunston Done For

AFC West End continue their winning pre-season form with an emphatic win at Red Lion Dunston in which the damage was done in the first half. After struggling o round-up eleven players last weekend West End typically had sixteen available for this trip to Dunston and took control from the start. New signing Dan Vines opened the scoring as his volley somehow crept in following a corner and the forward went on toa dd two further goals in the first half. Dave Capps grabbed the second whilst the fourth came from a great finish from Jack McDonnell, although Dunston did pull a goal back before half time. Read the rest of this entry

AFC West End 6-1 Woodhall Spa United

Spa Retreat as West End Hit Six

For the second time in less than four days a threadbare West End line-up produced another emphatic home win. West End didn’t start well, and under pressure they had Christian Sales to thank for not going behind as he turned one dipping effort over the bar. However, it was to be West End who took the lead as Bruce Garrod fed Jamie Lawrence with a neat flick and he made no mistake with a well-taken finish. Midway through the half it was all square again though as Woodhall got a deserved equaliser; the visitors’ forward finding space behind the makeshift West End backline to put the ball beyond Sales. Trent Valley 1-6 AFC West End

Six of the Best for West End at Valley

West End made the long ten yard trip left to face Trent Valley as a lack of changing facilities, a late referee and a 180 mile pre-match road trip for three of the squad giving  a disjointed edge to the Beers’ preparations. Thankfully Valley were worse off and with the home side forced to play with ten men West End eventually took the lead after quarter of an hour; Adie Gray taking advantage of defensive indecision to poke home Jack McDonnell’s corner. In control West End doubled the lead ten minutes later as Jamie Lawrence cut in from the left and struck a fierce drive inside the far post. Read the rest of this entry

AFC West End 3-5 AFC Harpars

Another Cup Runneth Over for West End

AFC West End crashed out of the Ron Eaglen Challenge Cup at the hands of fellow Division 5 side AFC Harpars on a mud sodden West Common. Missing a number of regulars The Beers handed a debut to Luke ‘Bruce’ Beddows on the right of a five-man midfield with top scorer Jamie Lawrence given a loan role up front. However, the home side opened the scoring as Lawrence controlled the ball just inside the opposition half and bore down on goal, getting enough on his shot to beat the visiting keeper. With the wind against them and the sun in their eyes West End were forced on the back foot as Harpars looked for an equaliser. Denied once by a great Christian Sales save and also by a Jez Ashberry goal-line clearance Harpars eventually levelled before the interval to make it 1-1 at the break.  Read the rest of this entry

Nettleham Res. 1-5 AFC West End

West End Sting Nettles for Five

After suffering their worst ever start to a league season AFC West End continue their Harry Redknapp-esque recovery with another win to move up to fourth in the Lincoln Sunday League Division 5. After surviving a hang-over heavy first road trip in nearly two months West End took to the rain-soaked and down-right squelchy Mulsane Park pitch hoping to put the league’s bottom side to the sword and looked set to do so as they took the lead through Sam McDonnell turning in Jamie Lawrence’s low cross. 1-0 soon became 2-0 as Lawrence got on the score sheet – the forward was on the end of a long kick downfield from Christian Sales only to be denied by the Nettles’ keeper but he regained the ball and made sure at the second opportunity. AFC West End 4-5 Market Rasen SC

West End Exit Cup By Odd Goal in Nine

AFC West End went into this cup match against Market Rasen optimistic of repeating their giant-killing act of two years ago. That outcome, if not the score-line, seemed on the cards again as the Beers started the brighter of the two teams and went into an early lead as Jamie Lawrence broke through to net his eighth goal of the season. Although West End were playing the better football Market Rasen were much more direct in the final third, and they drew level within minutes as a long throw was unfortunately flicked into his own net by Rich Brown.
