West End Sign Off in Style

With little to play for West End adopted the 4th team’s patented positions-out-of –a-hat selection system for the final match of the season. The result of which saw Alf don the gloves, forwards Hill and Kitching at the back and Wilson and Sumner as an unlikely striking partnership. Despite the haphazard line-up it would prove arguably the most enjoyable game the club has ever played, and also produce the second highest win of the season against a team West End were yet to beat in two previous meetings.

Golden Eagle End Cup Run

West End were looking to progress to the semi-finals of the Jock Mitchell Cup as they faced fellow Division 5 side Golden Eagle Reserves on the West Common. However, it was to prove a frustrating morning for West End as they just failed to click. Unable to break the deadlock in the first half they were undone by two well taken goals in quick succession early in the second half. With Golden Eagle 2-0 up West End threw bodies forward for a way back into the game but were punished on the break as Eagle wrapped up a 3-0 win with ten minutes to play.

West End Brought to Earth by Golden Eagle

West End’s 100% start to the season came to a disappointing end away at Golden Eagle Reserves by virtue of a four goal draw. It had all begun so promisingly for West End too as they led 2-0 inside four minutes with goals from Jamie Kitching, and a debut goal with his first West End touch for Jamie Lawrence. However, the home side battled their way back into it, helped by some generous refereeing by the home side’s manager who let some dubious challenges go unpunished, particularly as the home side’s left sided players took turns at trying to wipe-out Dave Capps. Still, goals for Jay Lawrence again and Gav Sumner suggested West End may have done enough to win it, and could have done had Joe Harper not fired over from close range. However, again the home side pulled it back at the death and secured an undeserved 4-4 draw.
