AFC West End 5-3 Bailgate Athletic

West End Stump Bails for Five

West End got their pre-season back on track with a victory over Division Four Bailgate Athletic that was even more convincing than the score-line suggests. The Beers’ always looked in control of this match, despite going behind in the opening quarter of an hour, undone by the ball over the top. A goal down West End found their rhythm and did everything but find the net until eventually the equaliser came as Dave Capps latched onto a through ball and finished well for his third goal of pre-season. West End hit the bar twice in the first half through, but eventually found a second goal as Bruce Garrod cut in from the left for his first West End goal. However on occasion the Bailgate forwards were still causing problems and again they made the most of a long ball to level the scores before the break. Read the rest of this entry

FC Middle 2-6 AFC West End

West End Not Stuck in the Middle

West End made their longest ever trip north to face FC Middle of Middle Rasen in the Ron Eaglen Challenge Cup. With FC Middle at the foot of Division Four West End were in the market for an upset, but had to work hard to get their reward. Despite two well taken goals from Phil Lodge FC Middle twice came back to equalise and level the scores at 2-2 with fifteen minutes to go. However, just as it looked like extra-time may be on its way West End finally got the better of their hosts and late goals from Rich Dungworth, Sam McDonnell and an unfortunate FC Middle defender provided a sizable margin of victory which was all down to John Moore and his ‘tactical mouse’.

Starting Line-up (4-4-2): Matt Hinton; Stephen Pearce, Shaun Hepple, Mike Smith, Jez Ashberry; Andy Kirk, Gav Sumner, Joe Harper, Phil Lodge; Sam McDonnell, Rich Dungworth
Substitutes: John Moore, Lee Matsell, Glen Wilson

De Wint 1-3 AFC West End

West End Shock De Wint

De Wint’s 100% league record was ended in dramatic style by AFC West End. Before the game De Wint had conceded just 8 goals and had not come close to dropping a point all season. West End however refused to let the odds distract them and went into the game extremely positively. West End’s formation gave them a great deal of space and possession in the midfield with Chris Dewey frustrating De Wint in an influential free role.  Read the rest of this entry

Branston Res. 1-3 AFC West End (a.e.t.)

West End Go Giantkilling

AFC West End went giant killing, dumping Branston Reserves out of the cup in superb fashion with a 3-1 victory after extra-time in a tie that constantly swung back and forth. Adam Bierton saved a first half penalty to keep the scores at 0-0 but West End soon fell behind after failing to clear their lines following a period of constant Branston pressure. The visitors kept their heads up though and after some good work between James Dewhurst and Sam McDonnell, Mike Northern got on the end of a cross to level the scores at 1-1. West End could even have gone in ahead but Branston’s keeper made himself very big to stop another effort from Northern who took a knock in the process ending his game at the half-way point.
